It has already been a year since the COVID-19 pandemic struck the Philippines. Ever since, it has brought about huge changes in Filipinos’ jobs, employment, and business operations. Protocols such as community quarantines, lockdowns and social distancing have forced a lot of companies to switch to remote work arrangements to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while keeping their businesses alive. According to the Philippines Total Remuneration Survey (TRS) 2020 by Mercer, 67% of the companies in the country have shifted to remote work arrangements in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. With that high of a number, we have plenty of reasons to believe that remote work arrangements will become the new normal even when the pandemic ends in the Philippines.

Here are five reasons why we think remote work arrangements are here to stay even after COVID-19:

1. It is cost-effective and lowers business expenses.

Since employees work from the comfort of their homes, businesses do not need to pay for some operating expenses. Companies can opt to get a smaller office space to lower rent. Other expenses such as utilities will surely lower as well because of the remote work arrangements. Meanwhile, employees will also be able to save more since they do not need to spend money on gas, transportation, parking fees and wardrobe.

2. It offers flexibility.

Working from home gives employees more freedom and flexibility when it comes to their work schedules. Some remote work jobs allow employees to start and end their day as they please just as long as their work is accomplished by the end of the day. Instead of wasting time on traveling from their home to their office, employees can spend more of their time on personal matters. The control that they have with their time allows for a better work-life balance. In addition, remote work allows companies to stay in operation. Even when emergency situations and unexpected events arise such as bad weather, businesses can still continue to operate.

3.  It Increases productivity.

Robert Walters Philippines surveyed multiple professionals across different industries, job functions and seniorities in the Philippines last year. The results of the survey revealed that 90% of the professionals claimed that their productivity has increased since working remotely. Working from home usually leads to less distractions, less interruptions, no commuting time, lower stress levels, and decreased absenteeism. At home, employees have the option to create a more comfortable workspace and more flexible working hours. These factors have led to an increase in productivity in getting work done.

4. It offers greater employee morale and retention.

The same survey by Robert Walters Philippines revealed that 8 out of 9 professionals in the Philippines are satisfied with their remote work arrangements. Higher job satisfaction and morale was achieved because of the flexible work options and the comfort it brings to them. According to the survey, 90% of the professionals in the Philippines want to stay in a remote work setting in the future. As a result, companies will be able to retain their employees using a remote work arrangement since employees are more satisfied with the flexible setup. Moreover, managers can implement ways to keep employees satisfied, calm and cool amidst COVID-19 all while working remotely.

5. It offers wider access to applicants.

Remote work arrangements allows companies to remove geographical barriers in hiring and recruiting top talent. With remote work, attracting and hiring of employees will not only be limited to the location of the business. The business will also be able to reach and recruit people from various geographic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds nationwide and worldwide. This will promote a business environment that encourages diversity. It will help businesses in hiring a much wider and more versatile workforce.

Due to COVID-19, remote work has been the most viable option for companies and employees to keep earning. The multiple benefits and the flexibility it brings is why it is something that both businesses and employees nowadays consider. Indeed, we highly think that remote work arrangements will most likely be an ongoing trend in the future.
