After days of waiting, you finally receive a job offer! You want this job badly and you can’t wait to start ASAP. But wait, hold your horses! Before you send that acceptance email, there’s a very important step you must first do – negotiate the job offer.
The negotiation part is often overlooked by many job hunters in the Philippines. Oftentimes, they just accept what’s being offered to the table. However, negotiating job offers, including salary, benefits and everything that comes along with it, is an important step. It is necessary because you want your compensation to match your value. You want to make sure that you’ll be compensated well enough according to your skills and expertise. You don’t want to work on a job that gives you less than what you deserve. However, you must know that negotiating is not just simply stating your demands. It takes confidence and discipline to negotiate a job offer. Do your research
Before you negotiate, it is absolutely necessary to expand your knowledge in this aspect through research. Before accepting offers and making any propositions, gauge the market average in the Philippines. Conduct thorough research regarding the standard salaries for people with your level of skills and experience. Moreover, collect reliable data regarding the industry, the jobs you’re applying for and even who you’re negotiating with. The information you find can be used as leverage to put you at an advantage in the negotiation. In addition, credible data can be used to strengthen and back up your propositions and proposals.
Keep Asking Questions
When negotiating, asking questions is a must. However, don’t just ask questions answerable by yes or no. Ask open-ended questions in order to ensure the flow of information during the negotiation. It will also push the recruiter/hiring manager to go into the specifics and details of the offer. For example, when you get offered a certain amount, don’t just ask them if they could go higher. Instead, ask them questions like “Is there anything else you can offer?” This can potentially pressure them into offering a higher amount or additional benefits. If they do offer more, great! If they don’t, you can say that at least you tried your best to squeeze the best deal they can offer.
When talking salary, use specific, concrete numbers
You may have a range of amounts you’re willing to be compensated. However, in discussing money, never ask for salaries in ranges. Always ask for a specific amount, preferably at the top of your range. For example, never ask for a salary between P25,000 and P30,000 when negotiating. Recruiters/hiring managers will almost always immediately select the lower number. Instead, always ask for a salary slightly higher than your goal. Choose the top amount of your range, in this case P30,000 or more. That way, if they negotiate down, you’ll still end up with an amount you’re comfortable accepting.
Don’t Be Afraid to Counter
Due to the research you have done in tip #1, you probably have an idea about the offer you deserve. One fundamental rule in negotiating is never accept the first offer. You can almost always get more than the first offer so don’t be afraid to counter. Justify your counter by presenting credible data about the industry that you gathered from research in the Philippines. Moreover, remember that you can also negotiate non-financial compensation like perks, benefits and insurances. Don’t be afraid to explain your needs in order to get them on the same page. Remember, there are deciding factors you should consider before signing that contract.
Never let your emotions get the best of you
When presented with an offer, remain calm and avoid getting emotional. Set aside your happiness or distress as it can affect your thinking and actions. Remember that it’s still a business transaction and emotions can cloud your judgment. Leaving your emotions out of it will allow you to think straight and focus on your goals.
